Garage Door Break-ins

November 27th, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

There was at least one attempted garage door break-in this week, resulting in damage to the garage door.  If you are not familiar with how this is done, here is a video showing someone using a coat hanger to disengage the manual garage door release handle:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMz1tXBVT1s

Here is a video showing how to disable the manual release handle (keep in mind that this will make it more difficult for the homeowner to release the handle in the event of a power outage):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iFwITjSZks

Security Tips:

  • Remove the pull cord and/or install a cable tie to prevent the manual release from being easily pulled (as shown in the video above)
  • Install a tilt sensor for your alarm system on the garage door to trigger your alarm system if the garage door is opened
  • Lock your car doors when parked in the garage
  • Lock the door between your house and your garage
  • For even more security, an automatic lock can be installed on the garage door track to prevent it from being opened: link 1, link 2
